Linde Announces Leadership Transition: Sanjiv Lamba Assumes Additional Role as Board Chairman
Global industrial gas leader Linde has announced that its current Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Sanjiv Lamba, will additionally assume the role of Board Chairman, succeeding the retiring Steve Angel.
Angel will officially retire on January 31, 2026, concluding his 25-year career with Linde and its predecessor company Praxair, during which he held multiple senior management positions including CEO.
Angel stated: "I am excited about new leadership opportunities ahead, but I am confident that Linde will continue to thrive under Lamba and the management team." Mr. Bob Wood, Independent Lead Director of Linde's Board, described the appointment of Mr. Sanjiv Lamba as both CEO and Board Chairman as "the most effective leadership model for the company."
In U.S. corporate governance, the roles of CEO and Board Chairman are typically combined to ensure leadership unity and strategic continuity, while in Europe these positions are usually separated to strengthen board oversight.
Additionally, Linde announced that Sean Durbin will assume the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) effective October 1, 2025, responsible for driving the company's growth strategy. Durbin, with over 30 years at Linde, most recently served as Executive Vice President of Linde North America.
Mr. Sanjiv Lamba expressed gratitude for Angel's leadership and "invaluable guidance" while welcoming Durbin to his new role.
Linde is currently advancing a series of significant clean energy projects while continuing to develop its core industrial gas business. During the Q1 2025 earnings call in May, Mr. Sanjiv Lamba revealed that Linde plans to invest $8-10 billion over the coming years to drive the implementation of clean energy projects.
