Linde and Air Liquide Among Founders of Carbon Measures Coalition
Industrial gas leaders Linde and Air Liquide have joined as founding members of a new coalition aimed at establishing a ledger-based carbon-accounting framework across key industrial sectors.
Named Carbon Measures, the initiative unites 18 global companies—including industry and energy giants such as BASF, Bayer, and ExxonMobil—in developing a unified system to track and verify the carbon footprint of products throughout supply chains.
By recording emissions data on a shared ledger, the coalition aims to prevent double-counting and ensure carbon credits and reductions are correctly assigned to the responsible companies.
To maximize impact, the partners will prioritize creating carbon intensity standards for hard-to-abate sectors like steel, concrete, chemicals, fuel, and electricity.
“To truly elevate collective climate action, we need harmonized product-level carbon intensity standards, supported by precise carbon accounting. This will reward low-carbon solutions and leverage market dynamics,” said Francois Jackow, CEO of Air Liquide.
Amy Brachio, former Global Vice-Chair of Sustainability at Ernst & Young, has been appointed CEO of Carbon Measures. With extensive experience supporting voluntary climate initiatives, she emphasized that current measures fall short: “Carbon Measures aims to build a system that unlocks market competition, spurs investment, and accelerates emission reductions.”
Current carbon-accounting methods often depend on company-specific frameworks or voluntary standards like the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, leading to inconsistent data and overlapping reporting across supply chains.
“The first step in cutting global emissions is identifying their sources—yet we still lack an accurate system to do so,” stated Darren Woods, Chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil. “A standardized emissions accounting method is essential to meet rising energy demand while reducing emissions.”
