Japanese Industrial Gas Giant Announces New U.S. Air Separation Project!

On December 12, Japanese industrial gas leader Air Water announced that its U.S. subsidiary, Air Water Gas Solutions, will construct an air separation unit (ASU) for Sandpiper Chemicals in the U.S. to support the company's planned blue methanol production plant with an annual capacity of 1.1 million tons. This low-carbon methanol producer has formally partnered with Air Water, entrusting the latter with the full responsibility for the design, construction, and operation of the ASU to supply oxygen, nitrogen, and instrument air for blue methanol production. Sandpiper Chemicals CEO Rod Ragan welcomed Air Water's involvement: "Air Water will be a key partner in advancing our blue methanol project, ensuring Sandpiper's long-term industrial gas needs." The project is currently in the pre-final investment decision (FID) stage, with operations expected to commence in 2030. According to reports, the Sandpiper Chemicals facility will also utilize Topsoe's SynCOR autothermal reforming technology. This process reforms natural gas to produce hydrogen-rich syngas, captures most of the carbon dioxide, and then uses the hydrogen from the syngas to produce blue methanol.
