Clarke Energy Commissions Biogas Upgrading Plant in India
Clarke Energy, a leader in global energy resilience and part of the Rehlko group, has successfully commissioned its first membrane-based biogas upgrading plant in India. This significant development marks another milestone in India's clean energy transition.
The facility is located at a municipal solid waste anaerobic digestion site in Chetpet, Chennai, operated by Srinivas Waste Management Services Private Ltd (SWMS). The new system utilizes membrane purification technology, replacing a traditional Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) unit, and is capable of upgrading 600 cubic meters of raw biogas per hour into high-purity biomethane.
The announcement of this commissioning coincides with a visit by a UK-India trade delegation. Led by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, the delegation aims to advance the implementation of a UK-India free trade agreement. Clarke Energy has a 30-year operational history in India, having successfully installed nearly 2 gigawatts of low-carbon power projects with notable achievements across India and Bangladesh.
The SWMS site processes biodegradable organic food waste from surrounding areas, converting it into biogas and soil amendments, providing sustainable development benefits for the local community.
This project directly supports India's SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) initiative, which aims to establish 5,000 bio-compressed natural gas (Bio-CNG) plants nationwide. Clarke Energy's membrane-based upgrading unit offers a scalable, efficient, and locally manufactured solution, contributing to this ambitious goal.
With three decades of experience in India's biogas sector, Clarke Energy demonstrates its capability to provide advanced renewable gas solutions for India's circular economy. The new system, which replaces the former PSA unit, processes 600 cubic meters of raw biogas per hour, upgrading it to high-purity biomethane.
The system includes a biogas dryer, scrubber, low-pressure compressor, two-stage membrane separation system, and complete instrumentation and interconnecting piping. Key components were sourced locally, ensuring competitive delivery times and delivering sustainability benefits. Initial commissioning results indicate the system has achieved expected performance levels at partial load, with methane purity exceeding 97.4% while minimizing methane slip.
Kyle Quinn, President of Clarke Energy, stated: "This project marks Clarke Energy's first fully designed, developed, and manufactured membrane-based biogas upgrading system in India, showcasing our ability to combine international expertise with local execution to provide advanced renewable gas solutions for India's clean energy future."
Compared to traditional PSA systems, Clarke Energy's membrane-based upgrading unit offers higher methane recovery rates, lower operating costs, and modular scalability, making it ideally suited for urban waste-to-energy applications.
As a strategic platform for sustainable infrastructure, Rehlko is committed to developing high-impact, locally tailored solutions through its subsidiaries. The commissioning of this biogas upgrading plant by Clarke Energy in India exemplifies Rehlko's commitment to driving the energy transition through local innovation, circular economy technologies, and resilient infrastructure.
This project also highlights Rehlko's strategic focus on scalable clean energy systems, local manufacturing ecosystems, and community-centric sustainable outcomes. Through Clarke Energy, Rehlko continues to deliver efficient, reliable, and future-proof energy solutions, focusing on innovation, quality, and long-term customer support.
